The hit show Peaky Blinders was filmed in Manchester. The show is meant to be set in Birmingham however a lot of the scenes were filmed in Manchester and Liverpool. If you have watched the series you will notice a few scenes were filmed in and around the canals these scenes were filmed at Castlefield in Manchester. There is even a Peaky Blinders bar located in Deansgate, which we would recommend a visit to.

Emmeline (Emily) Pankhurst was the woman who founded the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903. There is a statue of her placed in St. Peters Square, Manchester. Emily Pankhurst was named as one of the 100 most important people of the 1900s. Emily Pankhurst was an activist who organised this movement that helped women earn the right to vote in the UK. 

Quidditch Was Invented In Manchester

Are you a Harry Potter fan? When people think of Harry Potter, they tend to think of London or Edinburgh. However, JK Rowling stated that she came up with the idea of Harry Potter on the train from Manchester to London. In 1991, she stayed at the Bourneville Hotel, and when she left the hotel the next morning she created Quidditch. 

The Atom Was First Split In Manchester

The atom first split at Manchester University and it was first discovered by Ernest Rutherford, during this time he was teaching at the University. Rutherford won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908 and the first split of the atom happened in 1917. This breakthrough meant that the world changed in many ways as the breakthrough enabled the development of radiotherapy and nuclear power. The University of Manchester went on the name their physics lab The Rutherford Building in his honour. 

It Is Home To The World’s Longest Running Soap Opera

Manchester is well-known for the famous soap Coronation Street. Coronation Street is based around the families and drama of a street in Manchester, its first episode aired in 1960. If you are a fan, you can do the Coronation Street tour where you can visit the Coronation Street set which is located in Media City.
